Literacy Action Corps

Who We Are

Picture
LAC is a non-profit volunteer organization founded by three women in 1968 to serve Columbia and the surrounding area. We are affiliated with Pro Literacy America (www.proliteracy.org), which was established by the renowned educator Dr. Frank Laubach.
The Laubach teaching method was created specifically to teach adults. Pro-Literacy sponsors programs in 36 countries in Latin Ameria, Africa, and Asia. In the U.S. it has 1,000 literacy programs.
Our Mission is to provide opportunities for all to become more self-reliant and productive members of the community. We train tutors to teach adult students.

We currently have 75 trained tutors who volunteer thousands of hours to teach basic literacy skills and English as a second language, one-on-one, to 86 adults.
